The Penultimate Row and Scottish Thistles

As I write this I notice that Renulek has posted the last row of her Spring Doily.  Just when you feel that you have caught up, another row cleverly appears and the challenge continues.

Other tatters have such pretty colour combinations as they continue to tat their Spring doilies, but my aim was so use up old thread so as to reduce my stocks and I will tell you more about that when I have actually finished this doily. Oh yes and  try and make sure another one gets completed too!

Just before the doily challenge I received a request to tat some more thistles which were to go with wedding invitations.  Here they are on a Harris Tweed scarf which my friend gave to me after a visit to Scotland.

These thistles are now in Australia

  1. Your Spring Doily is fabulous!! It will have used up a fair bit of thread too.
The thistles are great - did they go to a Scotsman in Australia?

    1. Thanks Jane. Apparently the bride's dad is Scottish and so are her partner's parents and the wedding is going to reflect that. Sounds as though she has put an awful lot of thought into the day.

    1. Thanks Madtatter - truly people have some great ideas for weddings these days. I used some old Coats thread for the thistles but by the time I have completed these doilies will have run out of the thread!

  4. I think you Spring Doily is very pretty in those colors Sally. I have seen a lot of them, and each has it's own theme. I like your color scheme very much.
    pretty thistles too.

  5. I really like your color choices on the doily, though you said you were just using up thread. It's a natural/floral feel with the green to purplish colors.

And the thistles are so cute and clever!

    1. Thank you so much Grace - as you can see I didn't have much green!

  6. I really like those thistles -- they're much prettier than the one that grew in our backyard behind the shed last year. Your doily is really lovely. Its colors echo those thistles. What are you going to use for that final-final round?

    1. Thanks Marty I like the way your doily is coming on too. The final round is going to be the same as this one but with the pink from the middle to frame it, although at this stage just hope I have enough thread!

  7. This is gorgeous! And one more row? I'll have to see what it looks like!

You're so busy it makes my head spin! I can't get over how many tatters are doing Renulek's doily! It's not exactly a quick project! I picked up my shuttle the other day (Maple Syrup Festival Coming up and I have to get my demo shuttle ready to go), and found that my wrist got sore after a short project. So I don't think I could handle a large project! Also I admire those of you who take on custom orders, especially multiples! I love those thistles wonderful fluffy part - all those long picots to cut! - and can easily see why they are in demand, but I'm afraid after No. 5 I would run out of steam!

    1. Thanks Kathy - I am a bit busy and a lot of my work is dealing with bereavement and so tatting is so so relaxing, my problem is that I can't put it down so work late at night and then lack sleep! Sorry to hear about your wrist, but know what you mean because with this doily you have to keep flipping the work around and it is getting very awkward to handle. As for the custom orders so pleased that people want tatting although at times this can be stressful as you are not sure when they only see a picture, if it is exactly what they want!

  8. The doily looks great. It's amazing how the same pattern can look so different with different color choices. Also love your thistles. Prettier than the real thing.
