My Challenge

I am a bit naughty when it comes to tatting new patterns, I prefer them to be easy to understand with perfect results every time.  A few years ago I bought Lene Bjørn's Snowflakes in Tatting but could not motivate myself to tat any of them, partly because I do prefer patterns to be written out and not visual.    But this last week I decided that I would tat every one of the snowflakes and make sure they were ready for Christmas.  Now it was going to be impossible to start on the first day of December as I know I would not have the time or discipline to achieve one every day, so have started early with the hope that by Christmas Day I will have completed 24.

So I present 'The First Day of December' in September!

I did mention that parts of our old kitchen were recycled to make furniture for the house. Here is an example.

Just focus on the four drawer unit on the left of the picture and this is what it looks like now.

I am not completely happy with the drawer knobs but they were bought at least 12 years ago and at that time I thought they were really great, they are made out of glass.  I think my tastes have now changed and would prefer them to be in porcelain so may look out for another set.  But the transformation is rather clever especially as a lot of work was involved to get it to look so good.

  1. I like the glass knobs - but there are so many available, it's one of the small details that always seems to take hours to choose! Good Luck with your challenge, I'm trying to think of the name of another person who has recently worked her way through that book - I remember reading about it. It will be a wonderful collection of snowflakes when you've finished!

    1. Actually the glass knobs are beginning to grow on me. Beginning to regret the challenge already as not sure I will be able to keep pace with the snowflakes, even starting this early!

  2. Good for you! I've often thought of trying to tat all 24 snowflakes in time for Christmas... maybe next year. I LOVE the green knobs!

  3. Great Challenge but I did these snowflakes last year. The whole lot took me about 45 days, had to do a few twice to get it right. Love your kitchen recycle, changing the handles to match the new room is an easy fix. Looks like a good place to keep tatting.

    1. I had a feeling like Maureen that someone had already tatted the snowflakes, I am going to take a bit longer than 45 days. The chest of drawers is badly needed for clothes, otherwise it would be ideal for tatting, don't tempt me!

    1. Im in the garage is in great demand by others who want woodwork done, but have to limit him going elsewhere as he has a full time job and there is so much needed to be done at home!

  6. Good luck for your challenge, working through a book is good, I'm finding, takes the umming and arring out of choosing what to do next. I like your first, such pretty thread. Love the upcycling!

  9. I am also trying to tat all of these snowflakes. I have finished the second two but am stumped on the first one. I can see how this is tatted in two rounds. Where does it start? Thanks for any help on this. I love your work!

    1. Not easy tatting these snowflakes Gwen! Actually I tatted this in one round starting from the middle and then using a split ring to climb into the second round and again into the third. Hope that helps
