Pride and Prejudice

Today marks 200 years since Jane Austen's book Pride and Prejudice was first published so what better way to mark it than name a blog post after the book!  Jane Austen's novels have been loved by generations and adapted into films and dramatised on the television.   They are of course 'period dramas' but who doesn't like an old fashioned romance?!

PRIDE -- I am so proud of what 'im in the garage' does and this is what he has just made especially for me. We were sent some ironwood  last year and it was only enough to make a shuttle and a hook with hat.

PREJUDICE-- When it comes to using a crochet hook to add beads, therefore I have abandoned the idea in sheer frustration.  My problem is that every time I attempt it I seem to split the thread and make more mess.  So I have gone back to a needle and thread until I can be persuaded otherwise!

As you can see from the picture above the hook has a hat on but making them is very time consuming so the garage man is wondering whether, instead of making a wooden hat, in future they could just have a plastic cover, as in the picture below.  Then at least the hook will be protected.

Jane Austen died in Winchester, not far from where I live, she is buried in the cathedral.
The original memorial on her tomb made no mention of her literary talents but a brass tablet was added at a later date and reads:-

"Jane Austen. Known to many by her writings, endeared to her family by the varied charms of her character and ennobled by her Christian faith and piety was born at Steventon in the County of Hants, December 16 1775 and buried in the Cathedral July 18 1817. "She openeth her mouth with wisdom and in her tongue is the law of kindness".

  1. If 'im in the garage enjoys making the wooden 'hats' for the hooks, I think he should continue to make them. They're much more beautiful than plastic 'hats' would be, and probably better protection for the hook, too - I would think plastic breaks more easily than wood. Loved the paper clips you showed in an earlier post!

    1. Thanks for the compliments. You are probably right about the wooden hat being a lot more protective. It is just that he finds them a fiddle to make, but I can see that they are much appreciated!

  3. I have a couple of crochet hooks with the plastic hats, and those hats are falling apart. If 'im in the garage ever does make more with wooden hats, I will buy some.

  4. The Iron wood shuttle and hook are gorgeous. They look so smooth and I'll bet they feel nice in your hand
Are those plastic hats brittle/hard plastic, or are they more pliable like plastic tubing? That would make a difference in their durability.
I don't very often use a seperate hook, as nearly all my shuttles have hooks or points. The hooks I do use on occasion all have rings on the ends of strands of tatting or beads so I can let them dangle from my thumb, they are where I need them but out of the way.

  7. I love Jane Austen's books. You're right to be proud of the work that 'im in the garage does!! Sounds as though the idea of plastic hats isn't going down well, I'm afraid. I use needle and thread to add beads too. It may be laborious, but it works.

    1. Yep it sounds like that Jane, he will just have to be in the garage longer!!
So pleased to hear that you use needle and thread, I was beginning to think I was the only one.

  9. Oops, forgot to say, I am voting IN FAVOR of the plastic caps. As beautiful as the wooden ones are, if 'im in the garage' stops crafting we're all going to be crying in our teacups!

    1. Thanks IsDihara you made me laugh, can't have everyone crying into their teacups!
Ironwood as far as understand is just a very very hard wood, but it seems to have a lovely grain.

  10. That wood is beautiful, Sally.

I have a hook w/ hat, I think it would be a great idea to use the plastic covers.

  11. The hat is a nice touch but the plastic cap serves the same purpose. Maybe if 'im in the garage switches to the plastic cap, he will have more time to make more hooks. Personaly I use a separate hook for all of my joining so the hat/cap would never be on it and most likely lost in a very short time. The one I do have is still in tact because I haven't used it yet.

Here's hoping there will be more hooks with or without a hat in the vvery near future. I would love to get some for door prizes for Shuttlebirds in April.

Keep 'im working in the garage Sally.
