Work in Progress

There has been talk of a need for larger bobbin shuttles which will hold more thread.  So I found some sewing machine bobbins which we bought originally to put in the shuttles 'im in the garage made'.  However, in the early stages of making them we discovered that these bobbins made the shuttles rather large.

As an experiment they are going to be used in some pop-a-bobbin shuttles.  So far there is very little difference in size between them and the shuttles that use the Aero bobbins, mainly because the shaping of the shuttles has been finely tuned after years of practise. The ones you see in the picture are far from completed and we are not sure if they are going to work at this stage.

Also lined up in the garage are some standard pop-a-bobbin shuttles in the process of being made, together with some post shuttles.  As you will see there are some interesting woods on the far right including violet rosewood and snake wood.

These will not be in Jane's Etsy shop until next month, as they have a fair way to go before being finished, but thought I would give you a quick peep in the garage!

  4. The snake wood sound intriguing. I'm looking forward to the larger shuttles. One question, do the sewing machine bobbins hold significantly more thread than the Aero-type ones? Personally, it wouldn't bother me if the shuttles were larger than the "standard" Pop-a-Bobbin shuttles. As long as they are smaller than the Tatsy shuttles, I'd be happy.

    1. Well Jeff I really must test to see how much thread can be wound on to the sewing machine bobbins compared with the Aero ones. I guess this is part of my 'tatting duty' and must do it soon. Yes the the new shuttles are smaller than the Tatsy ones, will take a photo of them together. I really must get all these comparisons done before launching them, so everyones questions can be answered!

    1. Yvette the shop I am talking about belongs to my sister but as she is going away teaching tatting in Canada it will be closed until mid October. However, here is the link for the future https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/janeeborall?ref=em. I will also post on this blog when they are ready to be sold. Thanks for asking.

    1. Yes there are some amazing shuttles this time. Jane is certainly selfish going to Canada - however it does relieve the pressure of getting them finished at the moment!!!
